Inside: The Tempus.

Nestled amidst the charming British countryside lies The Tempus, Northumberland's most elegant boutique hotel, bar, and restaurant.

Style

The Tempus, whose name is derived from the Latin word for "time," has undergone a stunning transformation from a series of 18th-century stone barns to a luxurious hotel featuring 33 creatively decorated bedrooms. Jeffrey Interiors, an expert design firm based in Edinburgh, has carefully curated each room to exude an ambiance of grandeur, quirkiness, and sophistication, with a blend of vibrant House of Hackney wallpapers, plush velvet sofas, retro-style headboards, opulent gold fixtures and fittings, and stunning leopard print wardrobes, making every stay unique and unforgettable.

A cozy bedroom with a large bed, decorative pillows, and a colorful, patterned wall behind the headboard. The room has dark green walls, a window with curtains, and a flat-screen TV displaying 'The Tempus.' There is a bedside table with glasses and flowers, a dresser with a vase and rolled towels, and a multicolored rug on wooden flooring.

About

The Tempus is located at the heart of the sprawling 150-acre Charlton Hall Estate, within easy reach of Alnmouth Beach's golden sands and the vibrant market town of Alnwick. The hotel is composed of various outbuildings, including the Tempus Main Hotel, Farm Cottage, Farmhouse, Pole Barn, and Lookout. The Tempus Main Hotel houses the bar and restaurant, and it features 17 exquisite bedrooms. Superior Kings rooms, which have direct access to the Tempus terrace and are pet-friendly, are located on the ground floor. The Boutique and Junior Suites, each with an ensuite bathroom featuring a walk-in shower and a freestanding bath, are spacious and lavish. The King Rooms are designed to perfection, with accessible options available, while the Family Rooms feature a king-sized bed and two twin beds, ideal for family vacations.

The other outbuildings of the hotel are Farmhouse, Farm Cottage, Pole Barn, and The Lookout, which are available for exclusive rentals or can be booked on a room-by-room basis, perfect for family gatherings, friend reunions, or hen parties.

Food and Drink

The Tempus boasts a remarkable restaurant, The Orangery, that showcases Northumberland's culinary heritage. The head chef, Alistair Weightman, who has previously worked in Michelin-starred kitchens for Tom Kerridge and James Martin, takes guests on a gastronomic journey, presenting a lunch and evening à la carte menu that evolves with the seasons. The Tempus Classics menu includes beloved favorites such as fish and chips, a club sandwich, and heirloom tomatoes with burrata, while the evening menu is more refined, offering three exceptional steak cuts, rainbow trout with heirloom tomato, and fresh plaice fillet with a scallop and cray mousse. Afternoon Tea is also available Wednesday to Saturday from 2:30-4:45 pm, and on Sundays, alongside the à la carte menu, The Tempus serves roasts with all the traditional accompaniments.

The Tempus Bar, with its striking canopy of foliage and chic banquette and booth seating adorned with disco balls, offers guests an enchanting atmosphere to enjoy their morning coffee or savour a pre or post dinner cocktail. The bar serves signature cocktails such as the New York Cosmo, classic Margarita, or the House Martini, along with red, white, and rose wines, mocktails, beers, and soft drinks.

Culture Fix

As summer approaches, The Tempus has unveiled its latest addition, the Tipi, which boasts a boho-chic aesthetic, a wood-fired oven, and cozy fire pits. Located on the front lawn, the Tipi offers seating inside and out, perfect for enjoying alfresco evenings with family and friends. The bar serves a range of cocktails, wines, and beers, and guests can also enjoy delicious pizzas from the wood-fired oven while listening to some of the region's best singers and musicians.
